QR Codes Explained
What is a QR code?
A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode standardized as ISO/IEC 18004. It stores up to almost 3 KB of arbitrary data in a square grid of black and white modules.
Error correction levels
| Level | Recoverable damage | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| L (Low) | about 7% | Clean screens, large payloads |
| M (Medium) | about 15% | Default; good for print and web |
| Q (Quartile) | about 25% | Packaging, stickers, outdoor signs |
| H (High) | about 30% | Codes with a logo over the centre |
Supported payload formats
| Type | Format |
|---|---|
| URL | The URL itself |
| Address book | vCard 3.0 (RFC 2426) |
mailto: URI |
|
| Event | iCalendar vEvent (RFC 5545) |
| Geo coordinates | geo: URI |
| SMS | SMSTO:number:message |

Tips for codes that scan reliably
- Keep the quiet zone (4 modules around the code).
- Contrast matters: aim for at least 4:1 ratio.
- Size: printed module at least 0.4 mm; code width ~1/10 of scanning distance.
- Shorten URLs: fewer bytes = lower version = faster scans.
